WILLIAM HENDERSON (1796-18??)

William Henderson (1796-18??) would be my great great great grandfather on my father's side.  What I know about him so far I have learned from Mrs. Bernice Crane and her book Alabama Kinfolks Crane Henderson King McNew Sutterlin researched and compiled by Bernice and Gene Crane 1997.  Elsewhere on this web site I have shown a picture of Mrs. Crane who I visited in 2005.

William Henderson
Matilda King Henderson

William Henderson was born according to the 1850 Cherokee County Alabama Census in 1796 in Virginia. William married Matilda King December 11, 1817 in Knox County, Tennessee.  Click here to see the Ancestry.Com document.

On the way to the Henderson family reunion of March 29, 2009, we spent some time in Morristown, Tennessee with our friend Jerry McDuffie.  While in Morristown, we made a side trip to Knoxville where I was able to visit the Knox County Archives on March 24, 2009 in downtown Knoxville.  I was able to obtain a copy of the marriage bond between William Henderson and Matilda King.  Click here to see a copy of the bond and the strong proof of the relationship with William Y. King.

Matilda was born in 1804 in North Carolina. Mrs. Crane did not have their death dates. The bondsman who signed for their marriage was William Y. King. Mrs. Crane believes that William King was Matilda's brother...William Y. King married Peggy Lavimore on June 19, 1817 in Knox County and he was found in 1830 Roane County, TN census. His age would make him a brother.

While on the same trip where I was able to obtain the copies of the marriage bond between William Henderson and Matilda King, I spent some time in the Tennessee Room of the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection located on Gay Street in downtown Knoxville.  I did not allot enough time so I will have to go back as I need to do additional research on Roane County, Tennessee.  I was able to look at the Tax Lists Vol. 1-3 1822-1840, Bailey 976.87 Roane McClung Historical Collection.  In that book, I was able to find mention on page 126 Captain Taylor Co, Tax List for 1825 and I found William Y. King and William Henderson. William Y. King had land and William Henderson did not.  In another book, McClung Historical Collection Roane County TN, 1830 and 1840 Federal Census and Tax Lists, Bailey, reference is made to the 1830 census showing Richard King, William Y. King and William Henderson as being in the 1830 census in Roane County Tennessee. I have the 1830 census form. Click on the link below and look for the picture album Census Records.  The album will have a picture of a Census Record on the cover.  Click on the cover and you can view various census records.  Remember to click on each record to see a description of that record.  Also there are multiple pages within the album. In this case you will see the 1830 Census showing Wm Henderson. You will also see some of the caveats I have had to introduce to analyze the record.

Also, according to a conversation Mrs. Crane had with EDD Henderson when she first began her research, EDD said Hiram Henderson and William King were cousins. Mrs. Crane also believes Thomas M. King was Matilda's brother. Mrs. Crane refers to the King families later in her book.

I. William Henderson their oldest son born Abt. 1818 died March 30, 1838, Florida Indian War; married Mary Golden October 21, 1837. We do not have her death date.  William was a Private in Company C (Griffin's) Snodgrass Regiment North Alabama Mounted Volunteers fought in the Florida Indian War of 1837-1838. He enlisted on October 26, 1837 at Bellefonte, Florida and died March 30, 1838. William had been married to Mary Golden about five months at the time of his death.  Part of the above information was sent to me by my cousin Uyless Ray Wallace. Ray references: [Barbara Sutterlin]. II. Elizabeth Henderson "Betty" their oldest daughter born February 1820 married William McNew on April 18, 1838 in DeKalb County Alabama. William born Feb. 15, 1816 died November 15 , 1893.  William was a younger brother of Elijah McNew who we will discuss later.  They are buried in the McNew Cemetery in Faulkner County, Arkansas. Her family history is included. The McNew family tree is so intertwined with the Henderson family tree that I will have a section on the McNew family tree later this year.  For an excellent review of the family tree of William and Elizabeth Henderson McNew and their ancestors, I suggest the following URL http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~fww64/ .  It is very well organized and has lots of information on that family tree.  I had personal correspondence with Joseph C. Carroll in 2003 and he provided me with excerpts from his book McNew Memorabilia II, particularly the section on Descendants of Elijah McNew II.  Mrs. Crane included in her book an article on Elizabeth and William McNew written in the publication of the Faulkner County Historical Society named Faulkner County Its Land and PeopleClick here to see the articleClick here to see Elizabeth and her immediate family tree.

III. Hiram H. Henderson born ca. 1826 in Tennessee is the next one we know of. Hiram is my great great grandfather  and will be written about later on this web site. Hiram married Rachel McNew the oldest daughter of Elijah and Sarah "Sallie" Melton McNew in 1848. Hiram will be discussed later.

IV. James H. Henderson born ca. 1829/1830 in Tennessee.

V. Vaden Henderson born ca. January 1831 in Tennessee married Sara Ann Ivens (could be Ivers ) May 19, 1853 in DeKalb County, Alabama. Vaden was EDD Henderson' s Grandfather. EDD called him Vade.  Click here to see Vaden and his immediate family tree.  One of Vaden's sons was Thomas B. Henderson who was born in Cherokee County, Alabama in 1861.  My cousin Ulyess Ray Wallace sent me a picture that was taken of the Thomas B. Henderson family.

VI. Rebecca C. Henderson born ca. 1835.

VII. William Henderson ca. 1838 born in Tennessee.  William died between 1862 and 1864.  He is believed to have been killed in the Civil War but more information is needed. [Ref: Sutterlin]

VIII. Marion William Henderson ca. 1841 born in Alabama married Haley Belle "Mahely" "Mahala" Griffin ca 1842 born in Alabama. In the 1860 Census Marion is living in Dade County Georgia near his brother Hiram and is working on the railroad as was Hiram. Thanks to a living ancestor of Marion, more information is now known about him and his immediate family.  In 1870 census Marion has moved to Arkansas and can be found living next to his oldest sister Elizabeth Henderson McNew.  I have also been able to update information on his children based on the public family tree listed on Ancestry.Com.
