Umatilla Florida

Umatilla Florida was/is my hometown.  Because the hospital had closed in Umatilla with the opening of a hospital in Eustis, I was born in Eustis.  However, Umatilla will always be my home town regardless of where I live.  That is why my Missouri tag has UMATFL on it.  I will use this part of the web site to place information about Umatilla in general, but more specifically the Umatilla High School Class of 1959.  For the last several years, when I travel to Florida in March to attend the Henderson Family Reunion, I let my good friend and classmate Ike Vaughn know I am coming and he arranges a place for any of the remaining classmates to meet for fellowship and memories.  Not everyone can make it every year, but some do and its always a pleasure to see them.  Click on the titles to see pictures of the listed events.

Dan Smith is a good friend of mine who I met when we both were working on degrees at Florida State University in Tallahassee in the school of Meteorology.  It came to light one day that Dan recognized a couple of my stories I was telling and said that sounds like what happened in the town my Dad was born in.  Well, it turns out Dan's dad is from Umatilla.  He graduated from High School in the 30s.  In fact I lived at one time in the old Smith House across from Merrill's Garage.  Dan and I probably played together when he visited Umatilla as a preschooler in the Summer time.  While Dan's vocation was meteorology ( he is now retired as I am) his main love in life was history.  Dan has written a number of articles on the history of central Florida including the Ocklawaha River and has within the past couple of years established a web site concerning the history of Umatilla.  Check out Dan's web site:  http://home.mindspring.com/~danlsmith/  See if you can recognize some of the people and scenes and/or are willing to share if you have old pictures email them to Dan  at DanLSmith@mindspring.com .

Over the next few years, i would like to add additional information on each classmate from the class of 1959. I am starting with Linda  Faith Coyle Crawford.  Click here to see information on Linda.
