JOHN A. HENDERSON (1861-1940)
|
John A. Henderson (1861-1940) would be my great Uncle on my father's side. John was the fourth son of Hiram and Rachel McNew Henderson. I have learned quite a bit about John Henderson and his family from Census files, land patent books, and from information provided by Helen Williams who is a great grand daughter of John Henderson. |

VII. John A. Henderson born April 1861 (some believe he was born in 1860 but since his birthday is in April and the 1860 Dade County Census was recorded on the 26th day of July and he was not listed, Mrs. Crane believes he was born in 1861) died Feb 14, 1940 in Cherokee County. AL. However, in the 1880 Federal census of Cherokee county, John is listed as 16 and born in Alabama. As always, a lot of confusing facts. On Feb 20, 1895 he married Mrs. Martha M Bartlett Henderson born May 1864 died March 19, 1941. They are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Cherokee County, AL. John has now become the stepfather as well as the uncle to James' children Victoria, Della and Blake. Victoria had married. Our first contact with John A. Henderson in the official census records is in the 1880 census of Cherokee County. He can be found at the top of the page with his brother George and next to his older sister's family; Richard and Sarah J. "Sissy" Henderson Allen. Click on the link below! You will also note in this census that it states that John is 16 and born in Alabama. Look for for the picture album Census Records. The album will have a picture of a Census Record on the cover. Click on the cover and you can view various census records. Remember to click on each record to see a description of that record. Also there are multiple pages within the album. In this case you should be looking for the 1880AB census of Cherokee County, Alabama. http://www.burjoski.org/photos/index.cgi
Photos of the gravesites of Martha Bartlett and John A. Henderson. The photos are courtesy of Helen Williams. Note that date of birth on the tombstone of Martha Bartlett is not the same date as we ascribe to her birth. The stones on the graves were placed by Edna Hamilton Parrish. Martha Bartlett and John A. Henderson are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Cherokee County, AL. Most of the 1890 census will forever be lost. There was a huge fire in Washington D.C. and most of the records were burned. Ancestry. COM and other genealogical societies are attempting to piece together information from a myriad of sources. However, for those of us researching rural areas, we still do not have a lot of information. In the 1900 Census, John is living in DeKalb County with his wife Martha and his younger children and step children. His father Hiram is also living with them. John Henderson purchased land in 1898 in DeKalb County Section 20, T7-S, R-10E near Moores, Alabama. (Reference: Family Maps of DeKalb County, Alabama Deluxe Edition, Gregory A. Boyd, J.D., 2007). It is interesting that Section 20 is southeast of Section 18 where Hannah King owned land that was purchased in 1891. Elijah McNew and William McNew both owned land in Section 18 though their land had a patent date of 1859. See Land Patent Map below. Hannah McNew King would have been John Henderson's aunt and Hiram's sister-in-law. I hope to publish more information on the King family at a later date.
In the above land patent map, the bold black line running SW to NE through the picture is the DeKalb County, Cherokee County Line. John Henderson owns land in Block 20 and Hannah King in Block 18. Even more fascinating about this map is the number of familial names in the adjacent areas such as Crane, McRae, Hester and McNew. This map is taken from Family Maps of DeKalb County, Alabama; Deluxe Edition by Gregory A. Boyd, J.D. Arphax Publishing Company, Norman, OK; 2007 Ed. Click on the link below to see the 1900 Census. Look for for the picture album Census Records. The album will have a picture of a Census Record on the cover. Click on the cover and you can view various census records. Remember to click on each record to see a description of that record. Also there are multiple pages within the album. In this case you should be looking for the 1900 census of DeKalb County, Alabama. In the 1900 Census you will see the proximity of Hannah King, her son William King and John Henderson. Additionally, you will see on the 1900 Census form that John A. Henderson states he owns his farm. http://www.burjoski.org/photos/index.cgi
John Henderson is seated in this picture. At the upper left is his son in law Amos Holcomb, the man in the middle is his son in law James (Jim) Speer and to John's upper right is James Blake Henderson. Amos was married to John's second oldest daughter Edna L. Henderson. Jim Speer was married to John's youngest daughter Maggie. James Blake Henderson had a unique relationship with John. Blake (as he was called), was the son of James and Martha Bartlett Henderson. After James died and James's brother John married Martha, Blake then became the stepson of John but was also his nephew. This picture came from the Nadine Vaughn collection. I have recently obtained a picture of Lula Elizabeth Henderson Hamilton from one of her granddaughters, Helen Williams. I don't know the date of the picture.
Lula Elizabeth Henderson Hamilton was the oldest daughter of John and Martha Bartlett Henderson.

James Perry Henderson was the oldest son of John and Martha Bartlett Henderson. He married Leila Holcomb on October 28, 1917. This picture is part of the Edna Durham collection. The picture was provided to me by Helen Williams. Click on the link below to see the 1910 Census. Look for for the picture album Census Records. The album will have a picture of a Census Record on the cover. Click on the cover and you can view various census records. Remember to click on each record to see a description of that record. Also there are multiple pages within the album. In this case you should be looking for the 1910 census of Cherokee County, Alabama. In the 1910 Census you will see that John A. Henderson has moved back to Cherokee County and the census lists he and his family as being in Enumeration District 21 which was also labeled the Lewis district. It is interesting to note that John is renting his farm property in Cherokee County in the 1910 Census. He had listed that he owned his property in the 1900 Census of DeKalb County. While I have not been able to confirm the exact location of the Lewis district, I did discover that in the Friday, February 2, 1912 edition of the Coosa River News, Edna Henderson who was one of John's daughters made the honor roll at Blanche Public School with a grade average of 91. "Cruising Through the Coosa River News", Volume 3, 1906-1915; John C. Awbrey; 2007, Banner Press Birmingham Alabama. I have also added a copy of the next page of the 1910 census that will include Loria (Lora) Newkirk who is John and Martha's grand daughter. Della Lee Henderson who was the daughter of James and Martha Henderson and the step daughter of John A. after his marriage to Martha moved from home and married Marvin Newkirk. The story goes that Della Lee died in child birth in 1903 giving birth to Loria (Lora). John and Martha took Lora into their household and raised her for their own. In the 1920 census, you will see she is listed as Lora Henderson. http://www.burjoski.org/photos/index.cgi Click on the link below to see the 1920 Census. Look for for the picture album Census Records. The album will have a picture of a Census Record on the cover. Click on the cover and you can view various census records. Remember to click on each record to see a description of that record. Also there are multiple pages within the album. In this case you should be looking for the 1920 census of Cherokee County, Alabama. The 1920 census is an example of a botched Census either by the enumerator or bad information given by whomever the enumerator spoke to. John is listed as J. H. Henderson and neither his age nor Martha's are close to previous censuses. Maggie and George are still living at home and to my surprise as is Lora. I have also added a copy of a page of the 1920 Census that appears prior to the page that John and Martha are listed on. J. C. and Lula Elizabeth Henderson Hamilton are at the bottom of the page. Again the enumerator has botched the details with oldest son Harvey misnamed and given an age of 3/12, his younger sister Martha is given an age of 6/12. This kind of bad information makes it difficult to track down ancestors if you don't already have a lot of information. I have made of couple of corrections on Ancestry.Com but more needs to be done. http://www.burjoski.org/photos/index.cgi Click on the link below to see the 1930 Census. Look for for the picture album Census Records. The album will have a picture of a Census Record on the cover. Click on the cover and you can view various census records. Remember to click on each record to see a description of that record. Also there are multiple pages within the album. In this case you should be looking for the 1930 census of Cherokee County, Alabama. In the 1930 Census of Cherokee County which is the latest census open to Researchers, we find John and Martha still living in the Lewis precinct of the Cherokee County census. They are living with their son George M. Henderson who is 28 years of age. In the line above John you will see Martha Speer who would be John and Martha's grand daughter. She is listed as approximately 2 8/12 years old. I copied the previous page and on the bottom of that census you will see James and Maggie Henderson Speer the parents of Martha Speer. As you recall Maggie is the youngest daughter of John and Martha and at the top of this page you will see a picture of John Henderson seated with Jim Speer directly behind him. John died in 1940 before that census so this will be last census record of him. The two copies here are not very good but with some effort can be read. http://www.burjoski.org/photos/index.cgi
