Jim and Barbara's Trip After Canada into New York and Pennsylvania September 16 - September 23, 2005

On September 16 we crossed back into the United States at the Peace Bridge across the Niagara River. We spent the first night in North Tonawanda New York with friends.  On September 17 we toured Buffalo New York and went back into Canada to view and take pictures of the falls.  We then crossed back into the United States over the Rainbow Bridge and spent time viewing and taking pictures of the sights at the Niagara Reservation State Park.  Follow along with the thumbnails and see a few of the exciting scenes we saw for the next week.

On Day ten we toured went to a farmer's market in North Tonawanda New York, toured Buffalo, New York and traveled back into Canada to view and photograph the Canadian Niagara Falls; came back into the United States and spent the remainder of the day in the Niagara Reservation State Park.  Come join for some unique sights.  Click on the thumbnail above to see what we discovered.

On Day eleven we rested and spent the afternoon at Russell Patrick's daughter Tina's home watching the Buffalo Bills and enjoying the camaraderie with a number of Russell's family members.  Unfortunately, we took no pictures so we have no record, only memories. On the morning of Day twelve we departed North Tonawanda and went south on U.S. 62 until it intersected Interstate 290.  We took 290 south until it intersected Interstate 90 (or affectionately known as the New York State Thruway) which is a toll road.  We drove east and had breakfast near Phelps New York on State Road 14. After continuing on the Thruway for another 117 miles and then turned south at Mohawk New York on State Road 28 and continued on for 28 miles till we came to Cooperstown New York and the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Let me again thank Russell and Elaine Patrick for their hospitality.  Click on the thumbnail of the Hall of Fame Building and see some of the sights we saw in this great place known by all baseball fans.

We departed Cooperstown, New York late in afternoon and drove south on New York State Road 28 until we came to Interstate 88.  We then traveled southwest until we reached Binghamton, New York where we spent the night.  I know a lot of you have traveled I-70 through Missouri and have complained about how bad it is, well I personally nominate I-88 for the worst Interstate we traveled on during our entire trip.  It is under construction and I can see why.  On the morning of Day thirteen and after Barbara visited another Curves facility, we joined Interstate 81 and went south into Pennsylvania. Our destination was King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.  Our original plan was to visit a half a day with Barbara's first cousin Martha Nell Clements Callaway.  Martha Nell and her husband Warren have recently moved to West Chester, Pennsylvania where Warren is a hospital administrator in the area.  Unfortunately, our timing was off as Warren and Martha Nell's household furniture arrived the same day we planned to visit and it would have been a hectic visit if they would have had time to see us at all.  Maybe again on our next sojourn through that territory. So we decided to spend the afternoon at Valley Forge National Historical Park located on the Schuylkill River near King of Prussia.  Click on the above thumbnail of the visitor's center and see what we found.

After our tour of Valley Forge National Park, we spent the night in King of Prussia Pennsylvania and then departed the morning of Day fourteen and drove north on U. S. 422 to Douglassville, PA to visit with my Aunt Betty Joyce Henderson Wunderlich.  This was my first trip to Douglassville and I am sorry I never got there when Uncle Dave was still alive.  We had an enjoyable visit, albeit short, with Aunt Betty.  Click on the above image to see a larger version of the thumbnail and some additional pictures we took while visiting.

After saying goodbye to Aunt Betty, we proceeded west on U.S. 422 through Reading Pennsylvania and lots of small towns until we got to Hershey.  We then went to Hummelstown, Pennsylvania where our motel was located. Barbara was very excited as she was going to visit her cousin Geraldine Givens Delong.  Geraldine is the daughter of Acrie Givens, one of Barbara's dads brothers.  Barbara had not seen Geraldine in almost fifty years.  We traveled back to Hershey to visit and prepare for the next day.  Click on the above thumbnail image of Barbara and Geraldine to see a larger view and to see some of the pictures we took of the beautiful city of Hershey.

On Day fifteen, we met Geraldine after Barbara had worked out at Curves in Hershey and we went to, of course, the Hershey Cafe.  After having a scrumptious breakfast at the cafe we picked up Dan's mother who is a lifelong Hershey resident and worked and retired from the Hershey Chocolate Factory and went touring.  Click on the image above to see a larger view and see some additional sites in Hershey.
