| Pictured above is a copy of the 1870 Census of the United States from the District 22, Township 9, Range 11 of Cherokee County Alabama. Note four lines from the top of the form, John Fuller Head of family 37 years of age, followed by Martha his wife at 35 years of age. The children are listed as Melissa age 12, Ellah age 10, James age 5, and Boy Fuller age 1 who in the 1880 census was named John, George and Julia had not been born yet. When one compares the 1870 and 1880 census data, you will see there are discrepancies in the ages of especially John and Martha between the two census forms. There is about five years difference in both their ages between the two forms. In my experience over the last several years in looking at census forms, I have found this is far too common a happenstance. Note also that John says he was born in Georgia in the 1870 census but the 1880, 1890, 1900, etc., he says he was born in South Carolina. Since that event occurred 135 years ago, who knows what happened? | |
