Descendants of Nikolai Buchowski and Evdokia Zuhavech of Serafyntsi Ukraine
|
I am going to move to a new family tree. i will continue the Burjoski line as that is an established name and will continue to develop material on that line. Here in this section I am going to start documentation and provide information on the Buchowski line which represents my maternal grandfather, George Buchowski. When I first started the work on the genealogy I was aware that there had been a name change but did not know what the change was. I have uncovered enough information now that I feel fairly comfortable with the Buchowski name. Let's look at the circumstantial evidence! 1. When we discovered our grandmothers gravesite in Thorold Ontario Canada the marker was engraved Mary Dubiniewcz Buchowski. Click here to see her grave site: Day Seven and Eight of Genealogy Trip 2. Lillian Boychuk Weloski was the wife of John Weloski. John Weloski's father was John (Orest) Weloski who was married to Julia (Justina) Buchowski who was a sister to my grandfather George (Jurko) Buchowski. John Weloski the junior once showed me a photograph of his father and my grandfather George Buchowski. At the time of showing me the photograph, I had no idea of it's significance. George Buchowski would have been his uncle. When we were in Florida in March, we went to see Lillian Weloski at her town home in Casselberry. Lillian told me of the existence of Johnny Buchowski and Steve Buchowski. Their father was Joseph Buchowski who was the brother of my grandfather George Buchowski. Click here to see a photograph of Lillian Weloski. Lillian's home is Sudbury Ontario Canada. 3. After conversing with Johnny Buchowski and his wife Mary, I came to know of the existence of Mary Anne Buchowski who has traced her side of the Buchowski family back to the Ukraine to the village of Serafyntsi which is in the Ivano-Frankivse oblast (administrative region), 4-5 km e-s-e of Horodenka. Serafyntsi is a village that belongs to the town of Horodenka. Click here to see a map of both towns. Click Here to see a map of western Ukraine and an aerial view of Serafyntsi. 4. Mary Anne has provided me with some initial information about her family tree that leads me to believe that Mary Anne and I have a common great great grandfather Nikolai Buchowski. Certainly there are still pieces to put together. 5. Finally, I was able this past Summer to get copies of my Aunt Nettie Burjoski Van Loon's birth certificate and baptismal certificate. She was born Naskaha Buchowski, the daughter of George Buchowski and Mary Dubiniewcz on both documents.

When viewing the outline descendent tree you probably noticed several unknown unknowns. I have recently contracted with a genealogy company in the Ukraine to research the Buchowski name. As I stated above we believe the Buchowski family is from the village of Serafyntsi. There are metrical books of the Greek Catholic Church in Serafyntsi for 1857-1913, Roman Catholic Church of the town of Gorodenka (Horodenka) (which the village of Serafyntsi belonged to) for 1789-1884 available in the state archives of Ivano-Frankivsk region. Besides, there are metrical books of Greek Catholic Church of the village of Stary Kuty for 1871-1905 while no metrical books of Roman Catholic Church of the town of Kosiv available in the Ivano-Frankivsk state archives. My fondest hope is that we will be able to pin down the birth of George Buchowski and learn of his brothers and sisters and parents. |
