Andrew Jackson Givens 1827-1861

 
Andrew Jackson Givens died November 18, 1861 in W. J. Springs, Virginia. He was the husband of Eviline Unknown.  Andrew Jackson Givens is the great great grandfather of Barbara Givens Henderson.  The followings notes were taken from the genealogy book GIVENS compiled and researched by Charles E. Smith, who also was a great great grandson of Andrew Jackson Givens.  Confederate military records show that Givens Andrew J. enlisted in Henry County Alabama, August 6,1861 age 39, by Captain J. L. Irvin in Ind. Inf. Co. 3D. He next was shown in a Co. E 25 Reg. Georgia Infantry muster roll call date at White Sulphur Springs, Virginia on September 18, 1861.  He was under the command of Captain George W. Holmes' Mounted Company. It was later called Co. G. 1st Reg. Confederate Calvary.  His last pay was by F. D. Clary October 13, 1861.  He died at W. J. Springs Virginia.
 
Records show a Widow Application for Relief by Widows of  Confederate Soldiers: those records indicate that Andrew Jackson Givens came to his death from disease contacted in the service of  the Confederate States.  The records also indicate that his death occurred late in the war. Two Affidavits for witnesses to Application of Widows stated that A. J. Givens did not desert the service of the Confederate States or the State of Alabama. One Affidavit was signed by J. L. Windsor May 25, 1899 before J. T. Solomon Justice of the Peace.  The other by John Love May 31, 1899 at the office of J. A, Summerford Justice of Peace in the state of Alabama, County of Henry.  A Schedule of property filed with the application for pension by Eviline Givens shows here only possession was a bed and bedstead with a value of $4.00.
